What’s so special about Cooperstown, New York? 10 fun reasons to visit

Cooperstown, New York, is home to many unique gift shops

Yes, I am a lover of baseball. I won’t deny learning about the art of bat-making at the family-run Cooperstown Bat Company’s factory in Cooperstown, New York, fascinated me. But I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love Cooperstown itself — nor did I leave myself enough time to see and do it all.

What’s so special about Cooperstown?

Located in Upstate New York between Albany and Syracuse, Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This place had me feeling like an overstimulated child at Disney World; it’s a huge draw for the town and a big reason people travel from all over the country to get there.

However, whether you’re a baseball fan or not, Cooperstown has plenty to offer. Here are 10 (non-baseball) places to go and things to do in Cooperstown.

Glimmerglass boat tour

Hop aboard the Glimmerglass Queen for a mini history lesson

The first thing we did upon arriving in Cooperstown was hop aboard the Glimmerglass Queen, one of the 10 Best Boat Tours of 2022, for a narrated boat tour of Otsego Lake. It was the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air after our drive, take in the natural surroundings, start unwinding, and gain a bit of historical context for the area.

Be aware that the Glimmerglass Queen only operates Wednesday through Sunday and is cash only, so be sure to come prepared.

Brewery Ommegang

Brewery Ommegang even has a frisbee golf course

Located upon a 136-acre picturesque farmstead, Brewery Ommegang lays claim as America’s first farmhouse brewery in over 100 years. Whether you’re a fan of Belgian beers, are looking to be introduced through a guided tasting, or want some great pub food, Brewery Ommegang is a sure bet. Be sure to check the events calendar, as there’s always something exciting going on, from salsa dancing and live bands to Sunday Brunch Bingo.

Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard

Fly Creek Cider Mill has something for everybody

Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard is an excellent spot if you’re traveling with kids, but it is still very much worth a visit without them. For over 160 years, the folks at Fly Creek have been using a water-powered mill to press delicious ciders and have built up a farm store and snack bar (apple cider donuts, anyone?) around it.

Those traveling with kids will enjoy exploring the grounds, feeding the ducks, gem mining, and the Tractorland play area. Others may like to sample some of the hard ciders in the tasting room or explore the Mill Store Marketplace, which is stocked with unique gift ideas and features hundreds of Fly Creek Mill specialty items, like cheeses, jams, pies, sauces, fudge, and ciders.

Be sure to try the Molasses Crinkle cookies! They were my favorite.

Glimmerglass State Park

The Beaver Pond Nature Trail is an easily accessible trail for most looking to explore Glimmerglass State Park

Glimmerglass State Park, just outside Cooperstown, is a great spot to soak in the tranquility of nature all year round. The Hole 18 island tee keeps things interesting up until the end

Designed in 1909 by renowned architect Devereux Emmet, the Leatherstocking Golf Course at Otesaga Resort is considered by many to be one of the best courses in the Northeast.
